Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE PEOPLE-POWERED $10K CHALLENGE (#PP10K)?
The #PP10K is CAAAV’s grassroots fundraisin g campaign that activates the collective power of our friends, families, and social networks to raise $10,000 towards racial and economic justice in NYC.
The idea is really simple: if 100 of us ask 10 each of our friends to give $10 each over 10 days, we’ll raise $10,000.
WHEN DOES THE #PP10K TAKE PLACE?
The challenge runs from Monday, October 3 to Wednesday, October 12. We encourage you to ask your friends during the 10 day period to build momentum. If you don’t reach your goal by the 12th, no worries, you can continue fundraising until you reach your goal.
AS A PEOPLE MOVER, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
All you have to do is contribute $10+ of your own money, and collect $10+ from at least nine other people. 10+ people x $10+ in 10 days! Simple enough, right?
HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?
1. Register online here. Then wait for our staff Ruben An (firstname.lastname@example.org) to e-mail your personal fundraising page.
2. Start reaching out to your friends after your fundraising page is set up. You can use phone calls, in-person asks, social media or our e-mail template.
SHOULD I ASK ONLY 10 PEOPLE FOR ONLY $10?
The goal is for each People Mover to raise a minimum of $10 each from at least 10 friends, but we encourage you to ask at least 20 people, as not everyone will choose to give. The minimum gift amount is $10, but we encourage you to prompt your network to give an amount that is meaningful and comfortable for them, which could be anywhere from $5 to $500 or more!
WHERE CAN MY FRIENDS DONATE?
Each person who registers to be a People Mover will receive, via e-mail, a link to their personal fundraising page that your networks can donate to online.
Personal checks with memo “#PP10K [insert People Mover’s name]” can be mailed to:
CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities
55 Hester Street Storefront
New York, NY 10002
If your networks want to donate in cash, bring cash donations to our office or deposit the cash first and then make an online donation or write a personal check.
WHAT ASSISTANCE WILL YOU PROVIDE?
We’ll invite you to attend a group training with our fundraising trainers to offer tools, tips, and practice for success. We are hosting the training on two different dates, so pick the date that works best for you.
You can also check out our Fundraising Toolkit anytime for tips and templates on who to ask and how to make your pitch to inspire your friends to take action. Our fundraising coaches will check-in with you personally throughout the challenge to problem-solve with and inspire you.
WHEN ASKING MY FRIENDS, CAN I USE “BOILERPLATE” TEXT FOR MY “DONATION ASK” E-MAIL OR PHONE CALL?
Yes! Check out our fundraising toolkit for our e-mail template and phone-call script to get started asking. The templates also leave room for you to personalize your communications, since it is YOUR story and your voice that will be most compelling. Keep it short, authentic, and true to your personal voice.
WHO SHOULD I ASK?
Everyone! Friends, coworkers, family members, neighbors, roommates and others are all viable options. Tell your story and share why you choose to support CAAAV. The best advocate for our work is YOU, so don’t be shy about asking. Be fearless!
DO I HAVE TO GIVE?
You are not required to give, but we challenge you to be the very first to make a donation. Your friends will respond more willingly and generously when you lead by example, so please move yourself to donate an amount that’s meaningful for you!
CAN I START ASKING BEFORE OCTOBER 3RD?
Yes, absolutely! You can start asking once you receive your fundraising page. That would help us build momentum for the campaign before it officially begins. People are more inspired to give when they feel part of a giving movement that’s already on a roll.
WILL CAAAV SUPPORT ME AS I COMPLETE THE CHALLENGE?
Yes! You can reach out to our Program Associate Ruben by calling 212-473-6485 or contacting email@example.com for all your support needs. As our staff fundraiser, Ruben is super excited to help other fundraisers who support CAAAV in any way possible.
WHAT INSPIRED CAAAV TO PURSUE THIS CAMPAIGN?
PP$10K was inspired by the People-Powered $10K campaign of The Laundromat Project, an ally social justice arts organization in NYC. Two years ago, they raised over $27,000 and more importantly activated their supporters to take on leadership roles as People Movers.
The victories and accomplishments of CAAAV are possible because our growing group of supporters believe in us and sustain us. The #PP10K is an opportunity for to share our story and gain broader support as we push for a truly just and affordable New York.
IS THIS GOING TO BE FUN?
Yes! Meet other CAAAV supporters at our fundraising trainings. Use your fundraising to inject conversations about institutional racism and systems change into your hangouts with friends. Exercise your creativity to share your story on social media. As a People Mover from last year can attest:
“It was really powerful to see how the small donations grew into the 10,000 that we were hoping to raise. I really loved the idea of the campaign & the fact that it allowed for people to donate as a way to build a bigger network and exemplify people power.”
If you have any questions, concerns, or want a supportive ear while you fundraise, contact Ruben at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 212-473-6485.
After all, it’s his job to help!
