Public Housing Organizer Full Time


CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities is seeking a dynamic Public Housing Organizer to lead our newest organizing project: organizing Bangladeshi, Chinese, and Korean tenants living in public housing.  The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to build relationships with low income Asian immigrants.  They will be confident in door knocking, campaign planning, and engaging in direct actions to win campaigns on issues including language access and improved living conditions for residents.

About CAAAV:

CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities builds the leadership of Asian immigrant and refugee communities in New York City to fight for social, economic, and gender justice.  We work closely with local and national alliances addressing issues including gentrification, police brutality, and neoliberal globalization.   WIth a membership base of over 300 members and a base of over 3,000 supporters, CAAAV has been fighting for justice for communities of color in the U.S. for over 30 years.


The primary responsibilities of the Public Housing Organizer are:

  • Building the membership and leadership of Bangladeshi tenants living in NYCHA through know your rights trainings, political education on systemic and institutional oppression, and skills trainings through 1on1s and coordinating membership meetings and workshops
  • Working with other organizers, build community and collective power among Asian/South Asian tenants and larger public housing community to address systemic causes of community conditions through multi-lingual meetings and collective action
  • Recruiting, managing, and training bilingual volunteers and interns to conduct outreach in public housing
  • Building relationships with community organizations and tenant associations to engage Asian tenants in larger multiracial organizing efforts on issues such as language access, land use, rezoning, privatization of public land, etc.


We’re seeking candidates who excel in relationship-building, have strong verbal and written communications skills, and have strong project management skills. The ideal candidate will have:  

  • Database, tracking and follow-up skills
  • Cultural competency in working with Asian and South Asian immigrant communities, especially limited English proficient communities
  • Experience managing multiple projects and an ability to oversee a team of volunteers and interns
  • Excellent interpersonal, written communications, and public speaking skills.

Prior experience as a community organizer is not a requirement, but you’ll need to excited about engaging in collective action.  Because CAAAV is committed to building the leadership of South Asian communities in public housing, our preference will be for candidates who are bilingual in Bangla/ English.
